Some people have expressed an interest in getting started with mapping, however they don’t know where to start and have no prior experience. This has lead me to create this article/tutorial to help people get started with free, open-source GIS mapping software & data. It is possible that this article will become too long to be contained in one page, and I may split it into separate parts/sections if needed.
An outline of the content I will cover in this tutorial series:
- I will introduce
QGIS
and some (later on) some other software and tools used in geospatial analysis, data management, and mapping. - GIS topics such as vector/raster & points/lines/polygons will be introduced.
- I will discuss how to find & work with various formats of geospatial data, and how to import them into
QGIS
for mapping & analysis. - I will get into the basics of styling & labelling of vector layers, and touch on more advanced styling techniques such as graduated or rule-based symbology/labels.
- A full overview on taking a set of data (like the Natural Earth Dataset), loading a selection of layers, designing a layout & using it to export a PNG or PDF file.
